  1. White to move and mate in 4.

[NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.]

  2. A.S. Haley says:

    1. Qf5+ BxQ
    2. BxB+ Kg7 (or g8)
    3. Rg1+ Kh8
    4. Bf6++

  3. A.S. Haley says:

The combox is not yet working right, Fr. Z. It gave me only a small, narrow window to the right of the chess diagram in which to write, and the “Preview” option was not visible or available; only “Post Comment” directly. After I chose to post the comment, now this new combox appeared, full size, but again without any “Preview comment” button. (Viewing this in Safari on my MacBook; it’s always worked before you migrated your site.) So once again I have to post it, but I expect you simply to take note, and then delete it — thanks.

  4. TheCavalierHatherly says:

Tis fit alone to mock suchlike in verse.

“What bird on yonder window breaks,
It is deceased, the government is the dumb.”

  5. JonPatrick says:

Well I’ve read or am reading 6 of the books on the British government’s list. Now I have some good suggestions as to further reading (if they consider it subversive it must be good).

  6. Not says:

When we were homeschooling our daughters, every summer we had them read from the book list from the encyclopedia Brittanica. The idea was if you read classic literature it would help you write correctly.
As you can see, I should have been reading too.

  7. Macarius says:

I’m having a difficult time picturing Mr. Bilbo Baggins as an “extremist.”

  8. EAW says:

@A.S. Haley: I experienced the same in another thread a couple of days ago. While I am typing this, there is also no preview button.

  9. hvratstpls2 says:

I would add anything by Dr. Seuss especially the Cat in the Hat…domineering figure with control of all things.

  10. PostCatholic says:

I’ve read all but the Mason and the Tolkein (but not for want of trying. I know many people love Tolkein; I found somnolent). I don’t think anyone is going to confuse me for the right wing. This honestly looks like the syllabus for a freshman course I had in Political Science in college. I’d love to see the far left extremist book list, if they published one.
